See ya, September
Raise your hand if you thought we’d make it here. September brought us many events that will go down in history, and with surmounting tensions, we can feel like it’s us against the world. The book recommendations below match this feeling and are sure to keep you company when you lie awake at night. Thank you to everyone who has joined me so far in this 100 book list, you can find my full list of book recommendations here. (We’re still chugging along, don’t you worry.)
As a general reminder, wear a mask, wash your hands, and vote like your life depends on it. Because it does.
While we are preparing to mark the hundredth anniversary of the burning of Black Wall Street or the Greenwood District of Tulsa, OK, in May 1921, we shouldn't forget this book by Zora Neale Hurston.
Loneliness and isolation can induce hysteria in susceptible people. Margot Livesey's new book is about three young people whose lives are altered by this overwhelming emotion.
Joseph Conrad’s seafaring novel causes us to look into our psyche and determine who we admire most, the survivor or the warrior?
Don DeLillo’s specialty is hysteria - more specifically how it is now always with us, under the surface, waiting for the right conditions to break out in the form of a cult, or a riot, or a community falling apart due to a cultural crisis.
For any new readers: My new novel, Tania the Revolutionary, is available on Amazon for Kindle and paperback or Barnes & Noble for eBook.
