If Your New Year’s Resolution is to Read More Books…

This month, we’re reading about writing, writing, and assuming the worst - so not much is new. Speaking of new: New readers can enjoy the 100 book recommendations on my website for any kind of reader. I’d love to start incorporating my movie recommendations into this monthly review as well.

Along with my recommendations below, you can find another one of my book recommendations, Tania the Revolutionary, on Amazon for Kindle and paperback or on Barnes & Noble for eBook.

Think of the Best American Short Stories annual as a sort of Rorschach test. Regardless of what you think you think of the 20 stories included each year, perhaps what it's really showing you is you.

There is every conceivable reason not to. For one thing, not everyone wants you to, since they don't agree with how you see things. Some days, it will seem nobody wants you to. Minot uses minimalism to speak volumes about the obstacles to telling our stories.

In the Novel of Sensation, when you suspect the people next door to you might be doing the most horrible things imaginable, you always turn out to be right. In a regular novel, you're always wrong -- the truth is actually more complicated.

This month’s movie rec is Never Rarely Sometimes Always. From the mind of Eliza Hittman, this 2020 film was a memorable one and highly recommended for everyone. I enjoy it because the dark secrets being kept by the hero overlap with the dark secrets being kept by the hero of my book, Tania the Revolutionary.

For any new readers: My new novel, Tania the Revolutionary, is available on Amazon for Kindle and paperback or Barnes & Noble for eBook.
